Heating

Heat the room, not the whole house

Close doors and draught-proof gaps so warmth stays where you use it. Thermostatic radiator valves let you set different temperatures for each room, which can reduce what you spend on heating rooms you rarely use.

Laundry

Spin at a higher speed to dry faster

A higher spin speed removes more water before drying, which shortens time in a dryer or on an airer. Check the care label first, and run full loads rather than small ones to make better use of each cycle.

Ventilation

Keep an eye on humidity

A cheap digital hygrometer shows your indoor humidity at a glance. Aim to keep it below about 60% in winter; if it stays higher, condensation and mold become more likely, and a dehumidifier may be worth considering.

Winter routine

A simple drying and ventilation routine

01

Run the extractor or open a window while you cook and shower

Remove moisture at the source. Keep bathroom and kitchen doors closed so steam does not spread to other rooms.

02

Dry laundry in the room with the most ventilation

Use a heated airer only when outdoor drying is not possible, and place it where air can circulate. Avoid drying clothes on radiators, which slows drying and traps moisture.

03

Ventilate briefly every day

Open windows for a few minutes once or twice a day, even in cold weather. This clears humid air and helps prevent condensation on cold walls and window frames.
